Code Enforcement Officers; who are they and what do they do?
Code enforcement officers provide essential and beneficial services that help ensure the highest quality of life. They are dedicated professionals that provide for the safety, health and welfare of citizens through the enforcement of building, zoning, housing, animal control, fire safety, environmental and other codes and ordinances. Code enforcement officers are compassionate individuals that above all else try to work with residents to gain voluntary compliance through a process of education.
To work for the City of Richardson, a code enforcement officer must earn the distinction of Certified Code Enforcement Officer from the Texas Department of State Health Services. This requires more than 40 hours of initial training and testing as well as 6 hours of continuing education annually. In addition, code enforcement officers must possess a bachelor’s degree in a field such as criminal justice or political science and have extensive knowledge of and experience in construction and inspection principles and practices. Many of Richardson’s code enforcement officers also possess advanced certifications from the State of Texas and the American Association of Code Enforcement.
The City of Richardson is proud of its code enforcement officers for being dedicated, well-trained individuals who are committed to savings lives and improving neighborhoods in the course of their daily jobs.

The City of Richardson’s code enforcement team consists of 12 members including 3 code enforcement supervisors, 8 code enforcement officers, and 1 Spanish-speaking code enforcement officer.
